A complete guide to Louisiana courts

Louisiana has 42 numbered Judicial District Courts plus separate Civil and Criminal District Courts for Orleans Parish, five Courts of Appeal, three federal district courts, and a Supreme Court in New Orleans. If your case arose in St. Tammany or Washington Parish it goes to the 22nd JDC in Covington. If it arose in Tangipahoa, Livingston or St. Helena, it goes to the 21st JDC in Amite. Both parishes sit in the Eastern District of Louisiana for federal purposes.

This is a working directory of every court in Louisiana — addresses, phone numbers and websites, organized the way attorneys actually reference them. The Northshore courts are listed first because that is where we practice.

Northshore courts (St. Tammany and Tangipahoa)

If you were injured in a crash on the Northshore, this is where your case would be filed if it does not settle.

A note that trips people up: St. Tammany and Tangipahoa are different judicial districts. A Covington case and a Hammond case are heard in different courthouses, before different judges, under different local rules, and in front of different jury pools. There are 42 numbered judicial districts. There is no 41st Judicial District Court — Orleans Parish is not numbered, and is split into separate Civil and Criminal District Courts. For rural districts, the Parish Clerk of Court is generally the right first contact.

Frequently asked questions

Which court handles a car accident in Covington?

The 22nd Judicial District Court at 701 N. Columbia Street in Covington, which covers all of St. Tammany and Washington Parish. Most claims settle without a suit ever being filed, but the court a case would be filed in still shapes it — local rules, scheduling practice and the jury pool all factor into what an insurer will pay.

Why is there no 41st Judicial District Court?

The numbering skips it. Louisiana has districts numbered 1 through 42 with no 41st, and Orleans Parish operates outside the numbered system entirely through its Civil and Criminal District Courts.

Is Tangipahoa Parish in the same district as St. Tammany?

No. St. Tammany is in the 22nd JDC with Washington Parish. Tangipahoa is in the 21st JDC along with Livingston and St. Helena. Cases are filed in Covington and Amite respectively.

Which federal court covers the Northshore?

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, based at 500 Poydras Street in New Orleans. It covers St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington, Orleans and surrounding parishes.

Court addresses, phone numbers and websites change. This directory was compiled and checked in July 2026; the Northshore entries and the Supreme Court, appellate and federal listings were verified directly. Confirm with the clerk’s office before relying on any entry for a filing deadline.
